The Woman Who Gifts Rude Doormats to Everyone She Loves (Even Her Boss)

Some people give gift cards. Some people give candles. And then there's Shannon O, who has spent the better part of a decade telling the people she loves to go get bent β€” in coir, at their own front doors, with my full cooperation.

Shannon has been coming back to me since 2015 for rude custom doormats, & the recipient list is the best part: friends, family, & yes, her actual boss, who got a "Wassup Mother Fuckers" for the front office. Her mom got a Christmas one β€” "Merry Christmas Mother Fuckers" β€” which is, when you think about it, the most loving thing a daughter can stamp on a doormat & mail to her mother. I've been in this business a long time & I still think about Shannon's list. It's a masterclass in a truth most people miss: the rudest gift is often the warmest one.

The rudeness is the love. Stay with me.

Here's the thing the squares never get about a rude mat: the rudeness is a bit. A costume. Shannon isn't actually mad at her boss, & she certainly isn't mad at her mom. "Merry Christmas Mother Fuckers" only works β€” only lands as funny instead of cruel β€” because the door it's lying in front of is genuinely, always open.

That's the entire trick of the custom rude doormat gift. An insult on a welcome mat is a secret handshake. It says: you & I are close enough that I don't have to do the fake-polite company voice with you. You're on the inner-circle, knock-with-a-six-pack, no-need-to-RSVP list. When Shannon gives someone a filthy mat, she's not roasting them β€” she's promoting them. The mat is a love letter that happens to swear.

Why it beats every "safe" gift on the shelf

A personalized rude doormat wins for the same reason the boring stuff loses. Think about where the usual gifts go to die: the candle joins the drawer of other candles, the gift card gets lost by Friday, the branded whatever goes straight to the thrift store. None of it says I actually SEE you.

A rude mat with the recipient's specific inside joke on it? That gets deployed to the front door the day it lands & then read by every guest, delivery driver & nosy neighbor for years. It's useful, it's hilarious, & it's unmistakably about THEM. That's the reaction I build every design for β€” not "ha," but "oh my god, that is SO me." Nobody re-gifts the thing that was clearly made for them. For more of that logic, I made the whole case in why a rude doormat is a filthy-perfect gift for a friend.

The boss mat is the sneaky-genius move

Let's talk about gifting a rude mat UP the chain, because Shannon's "Wassup Mother Fuckers" for the boss is honestly advanced-level. It only works if you've read the room correctly β€” which is exactly why it's such a flex. It tells the whole office this is a boss who can take a joke, & it tells the boss that Shannon likes them enough to risk it. High trust, high reward.

Now, a fair warning from someone who's shipped thousands of these: profanity does NOT travel across every department the way funny does. Save the truly unhinged mat for the coworker or boss you KNOW would frame it. When in doubt, aim the filth at your ride-or-dies & keep the office ones clever-not-crude. You can browse the whole spicy-to-SFW range in my [rude doormats]([SPOON: link β†’ rude mats category]) β€” I flag exactly how spicy each one runs.

Shannon's in good company

She's not my only regular with a ritual, either. Liz renews her doormat every time she renews her lease, swapping the mood at her door year after year, & Kimani orders three supersized rude mats every three years like clockwork. My best customers don't buy a mat once β€” they build a whole tradition out of their front door. Shannon just happens to spread hers across everyone she loves.

Make your own list

The best part of a funny custom doormat is that it's genuinely one-of-one. You bring me the inside joke, the family saying, the thing your person mutters under their breath, & I make it real β€” spelled exactly how you want it, because I'm a real human back here spell-checking your filth, not a warehouse. Design a custom one & tell me who it's cursing out.

Every mat comes from a small, queer-woman-owned shop that's been helping people lovingly insult their nearest & dearest since 2009 β€” one filthy, heartfelt welcome mat at a time.

So thank you, Shannon O, for a decade of the warmest cussing in America. Your mom raised a good one. A foul-mouthed one, but a good one.

Be well & enjoy wiping your feet!
