Bad Bunny Halftime Show: Celebrating all of America
Y'all, I'm not a Sports Ball person, but that Bad Bunny Superbowl Halftime Show gave me the feels! We all need something to celebrate and come together as Americans. When I was growing up, we were told America was The Great Melting Pot and that our many cultures was what made us so special. The mere existence of tikka masala burritos should be enough for us to rejoice in the multi-cultural reality that is the United States.
What minorities were represented in Bad Bunny's Superbowl LX performances?
The Talent of LGBTQ+ performers showcased
-
Bad Bunny is a vocal LGBTQ+ ally
-
Brandi Carlile, a married lesbian icon singing “America the beautiful”
-
bi Green Day front man Billy Jo Armstrong showing up loud & proud for Gen X at the pregame
-
Did anyone else notice the hot men grinding up on each other at the white truck scene?
American People of Color
Coco Jones singing “Lift every voice and sing” which is also known as the black National Anthem. This was written by the leader of the NAACP in 1900 and has been performed at the last five Super Bowls. So don’t let anybody think that the Super Bowl has somehow ‘going political’ in response to Trump.
Celebrating Hispanic American's History Through Music
-
The history of Puerto Rico as a sugarcane powerhouse was represented with people in sugarcane costumes assembling quickly on the field, creating rows of cane being harvested as Bad Bunny sang.
-
Referencing the failure of Puerto Rico's power grid after Hurricane Maria
-
Showing familiar Latino businesses: construction crews, nail salons, bodegas, shave ice, taco shops and social clubs.
Puerto Rico's Connection to Classical Music
I grew up going to San Juan every summer where my father, Mark Popkin, played bassoon with the Casals Festival .
Celebrating Puerto Rican composer and conductor Pablo Casals, he founded the Festival Pablo Casals 1956, held annually in San Juan, Puerto Rico. In 1965, Leonard Bernstein conducted the Casals Festival Orchestra during his sabbatical year from conducting the New York Philharmonic and The Popkins were there! My parents got all dressed up to go to the top floor of the Caribe Hilton to gamble at the casino with fellow New York Jewish boy Lenny Bernstein. Shalom Compadres indeed!
The sounds and smells of San Juan are still with me. I've never found empanadas as perfect again in my life, and I have tried.
How Are Minorities the Real Majority of Americans?
Despite what the current regime wants you to believe, Bad Bunny's Super Bowl Halftime show is the real America. Immigrants, LGBTQ+ people, Spanish speakers, people of color, together we are the majority of Americans.
Who are the 'Real' Americans by the numbers?
-
57.5% of Americans, identify as white alone, not Hispanic
-
10% of Americans identify as LGBTQ+
-
21% of American marriages include an immigrant spouse
-
11% of married couples in America are interracial (with 43% of those marriages being to a Hispanic person)
So that’s 57%, minus the 10% of queer Americans, minus 21% Americans married to immigrants, minus 11% interracial marriages = brings the white majority of Americans down to a lowly 15% of Americans that are white only, not gay, not married to an immigrant or person of color.
15% is in no way a majority! The other 85% of us were all represented at the Super Bowl halftime show.
It's time for the majority to join together & show our strength with a General Strike.
The only Thing More Powerful Than Hate is Love
Bad Bunny displayed two important slogans that should resonate with every American and all empathetic people worldwide. The first shown on the Megatron was “The only thing more powerful than hate is love”.
I designed this version with the Puerto Rican flag
How is the USA Not All of America?
From Canada through Mexico, Central America and South America, the entire land mass of North and South America is roughly 16 million square miles. The United States is only 22% of that.
What Languages are Spoken The Most in The Americas?
Across all of North and South America’s population, 50% are native Spanish speakers and only 30% are English speakers followed closely by Portuguese at 20%!
At Damn Good Doormats we celebrate all cultures. With over 200 language doormats we love learning new languages! With welcomes in spanish, portuguese, tagalog, arabic and farsi, if we don't have it, just ask and we will design a doormat just for you.
What is The Meaning of "Together, We Are America"?
Bad Bunny finished his performance holding the football up for the camera saying “Together, we are America”. Reminding us all that the USA is not all there is to America.
For this doormat, I combined the flags of The United States of America and the Puerto Rican Flag into one harmonious design.
