Thanksgiving doormats for a table you might be dreading
There are two Thanksgivings and every year I sell mats to both.
One of them is the good one. People you chose, food you like, somebody's dog under the table, a walk afterward. The other one is an obligation with gravy on it, and you are counting the hours from the moment you park.
I'm not going to pretend the second one doesn't exist, because half my customers are living it.

If you're hosting the good one
A thanksgiving doormat for a house where people actually want to be should be warm without being a greeting card.
The one I make that does this best asks a question instead of making a claim. What are you grateful for. It's a grateful doormat that doesn't tell anyone how to feel, which matters, because people are arriving from wildly different years and some of them are having a bad one. A question lets them answer it however they need to.
There's also a straightforward pumpkin patch mat and a turkey day mat, and there is nothing wrong with either. Sincerity is allowed here. I make rude things for a living and I still put something nice out in November.
If you're hosting the other one
Here's the thing about a hostile doormat at a family holiday: it works precisely because you can't say the thing out loud.
You are going to be gracious for six hours. You're going to ask about the boat. You are not going to bring up the thing from March. And on the way in, everybody who is on your side will look down, read your mat, and know exactly what you're doing.
That's the entire mechanism. It's a private joke placed in public, and it holds a lot of pressure. Oh No Not You Again reads as a gag to anyone who doesn't know, and as a full paragraph to anyone who does.

The practical problem nobody plans for
Set the jokes aside for a second, because Thanksgiving is genuinely the hardest day of the year on a front door.
Twenty people through one entry in three hours. It has usually rained. There are leaves welded to everybody's shoes, there's a casserole dish occupying both hands so nobody wipes properly, and the mat you bought in 2019 gets a season's worth of traffic in an afternoon.
A few things that actually help:
- Put a coarse mat outside to scrape and something absorbent inside to catch the rest. One mat cannot do both jobs and the internet keeps pretending it can.
- Give the outdoor mat two full strides of length if you have the space. People wipe on the move, not standing still.
- Shake it out the morning of. Coir that's already full of grit stops scraping and just redistributes.
None of that is exciting and all of it is the difference between a floor you mop once and a floor you mop four times.
The guest version
Bringing something to a host who has everything is its own problem, and wine is what you bring when you've run out of ideas.
A mat is a strange gift and that's why it lands. It costs about what a decent bottle costs, it doesn't get consumed in an hour, and every single time they open that door for the next two years it's there. If they host every year, they are the least-thanked person in the building. Thank them for the door.

About the day itself
I'm not going to write a paragraph pretending this holiday has a simple history, because it doesn't, and you already know that.
What I'll say is that the part I actually like is the door. People drive a long way and stand on your step holding a dish, and you open it. That happens on this day more than any other day of the year, and it's the one bit of it I'd defend.
So the mat gets to matter a little more than usual in November. That's all.
What to get
The What Are You Grateful For mat is the sincere one, and it's the one I'd put out. Oh No Not You Again is for the other Thanksgiving, and you know which one you're having.
Want a family name on it, or a line only your siblings would understand? Custom orders need about two weeks, and they close for the season at Thanksgiving itself.
If the door traffic is the part you're worried about, inside versus outside placement covers the two-mat setup properly. Everything else is at Damn Good Doormats.
Be well and enjoy wiping your feet.
