ABOUT

Welcome to Damn Good Doormats: Art you can wipe your feet on!

I'm the heart, humor, and eco-conscious mind behind Damn Good Doormats, pioneering unique welcomes one step at a time. Every doormat I design is a step into the world of humor, personality, and sustainability—a trifecta that's close to my heart.

Your doorstep is the threshold to your world. Why not greet it with a smile? It's this simple yet profound belief that has guided me through the creation of every mat, making sure they not only tickle your funny bone but are kind to the planet too. From navigating the challenges of sustainable sourcing to perfecting the punchline that resonates with you, every step has been a journey towards creating the perfect welcome.

Hey there! I'm Spoon, the creative force behind Damn Good Doormats, where we've been flipping the script on boring doormats since 2009. Forget about those plain old mats; we're all about slinging sass, charm, and a whole lot of personality right at your front door. With a knack for nailing that perfect blend of snarky humor and eco-friendly vibes, I've turned a simple welcome mat into a statement piece for your home. It's not just about keeping the dirt out; it's about letting the fun in. Our mats? They're like memes for your porch, ready to greet you and your guests with a smirk and a laugh. And let me tell you, after years of doing this, we've got the perfect mat for every doorstep and every person. So, if you're looking to step up your home game or find that gift that'll get talked about at every dinner party, you're in the right place. Let's make your entrance unforgettable together.

DGD is an independent, LGBTQ+, woman-powered business.

Promotional graphic telling the love story of how Spoon and Lee created Damn Good Doormats, originating the custom doormat business in 2009

It all started back in '09 when we got married & bought a house. Excited to shop for our first doormat, we headed on over to Target and found... 4 styles of blah to choose from. Lee quipped that I should just make us one & being a crafty human up for a challenge, I did!

I had a DIY spot at a craft fair coming up with no idea what I'd be making, so I designed 4 doormats & BOOM! Created the hand-painted doormat business. That's right, every time you see ANY rude, funny doormat out there, I am directly to thank, or blame, depending on your point of view.

In the years since 2009, we have hand-painted and shipped over 40,000 doormats worldwide. And by 'we', I mean me. That's right, I personally paint & pack all of the hand-painted doormats with my own two hands.

Your Memorable Welcome Awaits

Ready to transform your entryway into a statement that guests won't forget? Let's create something unique, sustainable, and unapologetically you. Together, we'll make sure your doorstep is not just a passageway but a memorable introduction to your world.

Step into a world of humor and personality at your doorstep. Let's craft your unforgettable welcome together.

The hubs & I live and work with our dogs Werner Hertzdog & Tammy Sandwiches, in Baltimore, MD and  Berkeley Springs, WV. City mouse meets country mouse & finds a compromise- that's what marriage is about, right?

With every year that has passed, we have been dedicated to improving our products to make sure you get eco-friendly, well-constructed goodies from the depths of our doormat mines.

ART YOU CAN WIPE YOUR FEET ON! From geek to chic...
Personalized outdoor door mats make memorable gifts for birthdays, weddings, housewarmings, and the hard-to-shop-for. Funny doormats, elegant entrance mats, rustic outdoor rugs- it's all here! Geeky, goofy, chic, rude, crude & socially unacceptable, with over 800 welcome mat styles and counting, Damn Good Doormats is your home for doormat delights.

Make your outdoor entrance unique! Custom requests welcome!

Every painted mat is on 100% coconut fiber doormats with PVC backing. Mats have fade-resistant paint, but direct exposure to the sun and or rain will cause it to discolor and shorten its life. Like all cocomats, a sheltered location is recommended. They do shed for the first month or so and then stabilize. Depending on placement and natural wear (foot traffic) fading will occur over time.

I also paint pet portraits, another thing I've done for years for myself & friends but finally decided to make into an actual business.

WHO THE HECK AM I?

Thanks for asking! I am Spoon Popkin- the owner, mover, shaker and schlepper here at Damn Good Doormats. With a BFA from the Maryland Institute, College of Art in General Fine Arts (we called it Generally Fucking Around). I'm a longtime Baltimorean. A painter & performer, I like to come up with creative ideas to keep myself going: designing clothes & hats, painting murals, playing accordion & touring in a band (Women of Destruction/WOD & Estrojet, teaching art classes, making pins, performance art, painting- this is just one in a long line of fun things. Staying successfully self-employed since 1990 has been quite the ride!

I am still making my own art 30+ years later. SPOON POPKIN

               .

Here I am onstage, playing with WOD at CBGB’s in NYC! I bet there weren't too many women led, accordion heavy bands that graced that stage (; We played there a bunch of times, Louise really liked us!

And yes, that’s Joan Jett- she came out to support fellow Marylanders. She displayed one of her superpowers: always looking amazing in photos while I looked just awful. I asked her about this power, and she told me to “look at the camera like it’s something you really, really want”. I tried it the next time we met & looked like I was gonna be sick.

And on the set of Serial Mom with hometown hero John Waters & the band that beat us out for the film role, L7. I just happened to also wear my own ‘camel toe’ tights that day! Andriana's wearing one of my first hat designs. The '90s were hot for hats!
